This quote from Gerri Ryan, founder of the chorus, says a lot about the reasons why the group was formed: "Music is the link which brings diverse groups of people together, setting aside differences. It's truly community building and that is our goal”.
The chorus is led by noted music director and teacher Phyllis Elaine Clark, of Saugerties. Clark's musical experiences span the U.S., Europe and Asia. She is a soprano, choral conductor and voice teacher and early childhood music instructor. According to Clark, she "believes in helping people find their singing voices and to be heard. It's very empowering,".
The intent is for the group is informality with an emphasis on the joy and fun of singing together regardless of age or musical ability. "We just ask that people be able to sing a few notes to establish a voice category, but musical ability or note reading isn't necessary."
Ryan foresees the chorus as inter-generational and hopes that young children join as well. The chorus is non-denominational. All levels of singing experience are welcomed and assistance will be available in learning the music.
Practices in 2025 will take place at the Saugerties United Methodist Church (67 Washington Avenue). Members are asked to arrive around 6:30 p.m. and practice begins at 7:00 p.m.
Members are requested to drop off $5.00 at the door to cover expenses.
