Born: December 10, 1936; Charleston, South Carolina.

Education: Charleston Day School; Champaign-Urbana Jr. Hi. Smithfield High School - 1953 (Valedictorian)
BFA in Fine Arts (Architecture) University of Illinois 1959

1957: Assistant Field Engineer; PPG Industries; supervised subcontract to produce titanium tetrachloride; arranged for special storage and transportation with US General Services Adm.

1961: Licensed Architect; WV #62

1958-1962; 1964-66: L. D Schmidt and Son, Architects and Engineers, Fairmont, WV; Designed Hospitals and Institutional Buildings as well as private homes. Project Designer for U. S. Army control tower and new runway; Martinsburg, WV. Designed Fairmont General Hospital and numerous buildings at Fairmont StateCollege. Remodeled Post Offices for US General Services Administration; Designed widely-used prototype small post office.

1963: Holt & Downing, Architects, Ithaca, NY; Project Manager for various school and industrial projects. Restoration of Episcopal Church and organ; Owego, NY.

1967-68: Independent study in Europe; Studied alternate energy and prefabricated housing techniques in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Italy; Archeological dig in Yugoslavia; Studied historic sites throughout Europe.

1968-70: James Baker and Peter Blake Architects; New York, NY: Project Architect for NYS Health and Mental Hygiene Facilities Corporation; Award-winning rehabilitation center for NY State Health and Mental HygieneFacility in Binghamton, NY; Prefabricated Student housing at Bard College. Private passive-solar houses.

1971: Gleit and Olenick, Engineers, New York, NY; Field Engineer; NYS Industrial Development Corporation; Housing for the elderly in Rochester, NY. Experimental pre-cast concrete high-rise buildings using Danish Jesperson-Kay precast system imported from Canada. Supervising field engineer for entire project including materials testing, pre-cast panel installation, plumbing tests, parking lots and landscaping.

1972-present: Private practice; Wrote four books on Low-cost implementation of passive solar and energy-saving techniques. (Rodale Press) Served as keynote speaker for President Carterâ's Energy Symposium in Indianapolis; Designed and built numerous private houses using low-cost post and beam framing techniques. Project Manager for restoration of Saugerties Lighthouse.

1991-present; Part time Building Inspector Village of Saugerties, New York. Duties also include Sewer Enforcement Officer and Zoning Officer. Supervised installation of new sewer laterals on DOT Project on Rt. 212/Ulster Avenue. Designed and supervised construction and lighting for three Village parking lots and street lighting throughout the Village Historic District . Designed and supervised bulkhead reconstruction at Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park. Certified NYS DOS for NYS Building Code: 1991; Certified for NYS DOSInternational Building Code: 2002.

Memberships: President; Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy; President,Saugerties Historical Society board of Directors. Comprehensive Master PlanCommittee; Joint Town/Village Committee; Saugerties Village Beautification Committee.

Grants: NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation: $50,000 grant for Saugerties Lighthouse; $50,000 grant for reconstruction of bulkhead at Village park; National Trust for Historic Preservation; $10,000 grant for video of Saugerties Lighthouse history and reconstruction; Hudson River Foundation: Four grants totaling $62,500 for Saugerties Lighthouse Applied for and administrated above grants.
Responsibilities:

Alex Wade, the former Building Inspector, now works on Planning and Zoning matters as well as continuing to serve on numerous Village Committees. He also works on special projects to enhance the beauty of the Village. Alex serves as the Floodplain Manager and coordinates emergency preparedness. He serves on the following boards and committees: Waterfront Advisory Board, Historic Review Board, Plumbing Board, Electrical Board and the Beautification Committee. Alex is also the Sewer Enforcement Officer.
