The Department of Public Works is responsible for the maintentance and plowing of roads in the Village. This involves street repairs and resurfacing and working to correct drainage problems, with a goal of keeping the Village streets safe and clean.
Recent DPW projects include:
- Rebuilding and sprucing up the Municipal parking lots off Partition Street and by the Esopus Creek. This project involved funds from a beautification grant. Bob and the DPW crew did all the grading work, installed new drainage, prepped and paved and completed the job with new landscaping.
- 3 streets have been completely reconstructed and four other streets repaved. Often, this involves an in-place recycling approach where four inches of existing material are taken, ground in place and then put back. The When possible, the DPW team saves the old bluestone curbing by raising it to a good finish grade.
- Excavation for the Water Department and Sewer Department.
- Slope stabilization. Working in conjuction with the Village engineering team, the DWP team adds appropriate materials to sloped land to stabilize the areas and to prevent erosion.
- Snow plowing. All of the 27 lane miles of road in Saugerties are paved, and it takes about three hours using five plow routes to completely plow the snow in the Village.
- In the summer, street sweeping is done on a regular basis, to enhance the Village's appearance.
The DPW removes trash form the Main Street area, but residential trash is handled by an independent contractor. Each year there is a period called "Spring clean-up days" where residents can clean up their yards and put the brush, limbs, etc. one the curb for pickup. The material is taken to a Village-owned area where it is later burned as a DEC-approved controlled burn. This saves the taxpayers of the Village significant disposal fees.
Bob Ciarlante's crew consists of Joseph Staccio - Foreman, Vincent Schaffer (HEO), Joseph Zmiyarch (HEO), George Beisel (HEO), Brian Martin (MEO), Richard Forbes (Mechanic), Joseph Schaffer (MEO) and Thomas Maines (MEO). Seasonal part-time staff is hired on an as-needed basis.
Winter Reminder: For the safety of the DPW workers and your vehicles there is no parking
on streets from Nov 15th through April 15th from 3:00 AM until 7:00 AM. Plowing, shoveling or blowing snow into streets or onto
sidewalks is prohibited.
