Friends of Historic Saugerties Presents:

“Extracting the Truth from the Trade: The Delano Family at home and in China”

Recently, historians have begun to explore the Delano family and the evidence of their rise to fame and fortune as the result of their involvement in the opium trade in China.  During this talk we will hear Shannon Butler’s insights into this illegal business venture, including the Delano’s experiences during the Opium Wars and what they did with their wealth when they returned to the United States.  Eventually this fortune would trickle down to Sara Delano Roosevelt and her son, the 32nd President, FDR.

Shannon Butler is a historian, speaker, and writer.  She serves as a Park Guide of Interpretation at the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Site.  She has also worked for State Historic sites and the Saugerties Historical Society.  Raised in Saugerties, she earned degrees in History from SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Albany.

All Friends of Historic Saugerties are open to anyone who is interested in history!
